Video Diary: Waylon Jennings' "Mental Revenge"

  1. Cool find Morgan. I had only previously heard this Mel Tillis tune in the Long Ryders' version, which I've always enjoyed. Waylon's performance is kinda detached and bemused in comparison. (Not sure what to make of that raggedy-assed Christmas tree in the background, but 60s tv set design was often quirky to say the least). I really like his Tele-wrangling and overall bad-dude demeanor.

  2. This has been one of my drink a beer/sit on the back porch/play a song on the acoustic songs for a few weeks now.

I noted that odd Christmas tree as well.

  3. This is my introduction to this tune. Even if I heard the Ryder's version I don't remember it and I think I'd remember these lyrics: "I hope that the train from Caribou Maine runs over your new love affair."(!)

I'd love to hear Tillis' version, which I guess he recorded in '76, and some of his other recordings.

But this is great in its own right.

  4. That little guitar riff which is doubled is really nice and funky. The Long Ryders changed the riff to fit a faster, more rocking arrangement. It works for the song but the change loses the funky-ness of the Jennings version.
